Development of Glandless Cotton in Africa

B. Hau

ABSTRACT

Since the description of the glandless character by Mac Michael in 1954, few examples of important glandless varieties cultures have been realized out of USA. In 1984, 24 000 hectareas (59 000 acres) were cultivated in Ivory Coast with a glandless variety, ISA BC2, created by IRCT-IDESSA in Bouak‚. This experience has been successful on the agronomic aspects and it was demonstrated that the culture of this new cotton type can be conducted in the same way as glanded cotton, in particular without supplementary insecticide protection. The development of cotton varieties without gossypol in Africa would be able to play an important role in the near future to help solve problems of human food production in this continent.
