Performance of F2 Hybrids Produced Through Natural Crossing with a Dominant Naked Seed Strain of Cotton

J.B. Weaver

ABSTRACT

Normal fuzzy strains of cotton were grown in 1985 in a ratio of one fuzzy row to two rows of a dominant naked seeded strain. Open pollinated seed from the fuzzy strains were grown in the 1985-86 Winter Nursery in Mexico. Forty-six percent of the seed returned from Mexico were naked F2 hybrids. The naked F2 seed were separated from the fuzzy seed and grown in replicated yield trials in 1986. In general, these F2's had a lower yield, a lower percent lint and smaller bolls than standard cultivars. However, an F2 of a Coker 315 naked x DPL 90 had a higher yield than the cultivars with an acceptable percent lint.
