A Review of Fusilade 2000® for Grass Control in Cotton

Ron Burnett and Eugene King

ABSTRACT

Grass control in broadleaf crops is an age old problem. Control of grassy weeds in the production of cotton has been no exception. Grassy weeds not only compete with the crop thereby reducing yields, but interfere with harvesting and reduce the grade of the lint thereby reducing the cash returns per acre.

Fusilade, fluazifop-butyl, was introduced into the cotton market in 1983. The original formulation was a 4#/gal emulsifiable concentrate. The discovery and sub sequent marketing of Fusilade represented a technological advance equal to the selectivity of the phenoxy compounds. Fusilade 2000 is a product that will eliminate grass from a cotton crop without harming the cotton plants in any way.

The most troublesome grasses in cotton production fall into two general categories, these being annuals and perennials. Fusilade not only controls annuals but also the harder to control perennials. In some cases Fusilade 4E controlled perennials such as johnsongrass and bermudagrass, with greater ease than some of the annual grasses.
