Bollgard ® II Cotton Efficacy Summary – Southeast

Michael S. Howell and D.L. Pittts

ABSTRACT

During the 2001 growing season Bollgard®II cotton was evaluated in small plot systems trials across the southeastern states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. These trials were conducted by a collection of University scientists, contract researchers, consultants, and Monsanto field personnel. Systems trials were designed to treat each plot as needed for insects. There were a total of 12 systems trials in the southeastern states this year. Insect pressure varied greatly among these trails and with some areas having no insecticide applications for the season. Bollgard® II plots consistently reduced damage to both squares and bolls compared to both Bollgard® and conventional cotton. The seasonal mean across all locations for damaged squares was 0.6, 1.9, and 7.2 for Bollgard® II, Bollgard®, and conventional respectively, and 0.3, 2.0, and 6.7 for damaged bolls. Bollgard® II also provided $17.46 profit advantage compared to the Bollgard® plots, and a $73.27 advantage over the conventional cotton.
