Experiments were conducted to evaluate Telone, dichloropropene and Telone plus Vydate, dichloropropene plus oxamyl, for Reniforn nematode Rotylenchus reniformis control in cotton. Telone was applied behind the subsoil shank at a rate of three gallons per acre. Vydate treatments were applied over the top at the fifth true leaf stage at a rate of 18.5 ounces per acre. Both Telone and Telone plus Vydate treatments reduced nematode levels below treatment thresholds recommended by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. Nematode levels were reduced for several weeks longer in the Vydate plots than in both the Telone and the untreated plots. Nematode levels did increase above treatment thresholds in all plots before harvest. No differences in yield, grade or net returns were observed among treatments. Limited water for irrigation may have decreased the possible yield benefits obtained from early season nematode control. The addition of a nematicide treatment appears to be justified under heavy nematode pressure or under intensive management or high yield situations.
