Steward: 2000 Performance and Key Learnings in the Mid-South

C. S. Williams, R. M. Edmund, E. P. Castner and Dan D. Sherrod

ABSTRACT

Steward Cotton Insecticide was granted a Section 18 Emergency Exemption for the control of resistant Tobacco budworm and Beet armyworm in the mid-south states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi in 2000. Over 75 cotton consultants from these mid-south states evaluated the performance of Steward Cotton Insecticide on these pests as well as other insect pests present at the time of application. Also in 2000, small plot trials were conducted by University and private entomologists as well as DuPont field scientists to further investigate and confirm the proper Steward rate and the spectrum of activity.

Based on both large block and small plot replicated trials, the following conclusions were made: Steward provided excellent control of Tobacco budworm under low to moderate pressure and when moth flights were dicrete. As populations became heavy and moth flights continuous, fair to good control was observed. The best Steward performance on Tobacco budworm was observed when applied to eggs at or near hatch. Steward provided good to excellent control of Tarnished plant bug and control equal to that of commercial standards. Excellent control of Beet armyworm, Fall armyworm and Loopers was observed in both conventional and BT cotton. When Steward was applied to BT cotton in late season for the control of Cotton bollworm, Tarnished plant bug and fall armyworm, excellent control of the pests was observed as well as increased cotton yields.
