Although synthetic fibers have traditionally been the foundation of the nonwoven industry, natural fibers have been receiving increasing attention in the past few years. Woodpulp fiber forms the basis for an important segment of the industry; this includes virgin as well as secondary fiber. Cotton, in the bleached and unbleached state, is finding greater use in specialty segments. Some bast fibers have also been used for years for their special end-product attributes in wetform processes. Flax and hemp are experiencing increased use in a growing variety of industrial applications. Some additional natural fibers are being investigated for nonwovens production as the search for special properties and low-cost in fibrous raw materials continues. |
