Seed Selection: A Mid-South Grower’s Perspective

Jimmy Hargett

ABSTRACT

Two main factors will be involved in my seed decisions in 2000.

Thrips Control One was in 1999 all products for thrips control were taken away from the seed I planted. All the early-planted cotton that I had was sprayed two or three times before the Temik we had under the row took effect. I spent more money on thrips control in 1999 than on any previous crop. I don't want any more cottonseed in my operation that has not been treated with something like Orthene.

Roundup Ready Why would we put confidence in data on Roundup Ready seed that has not been sprayed with Roundup?

These two words (Roundup Ready) can cause more talk on raising cotton in the last few years than any subject I know. We as farmers put a lot of emphasis on data we get from good University trials and demonstrations. I want someone to tell me how we can plant RR cotton with Roundup over the top based on results from university trials that use no Roundup over the top. We all know that sometimes Roundup can affect cotton. Because the universities do not spray this chemical, I don't have any confidence anymore on their results with RR cotton being able to tell me what to expect in yield.
