ABSTRACT
Thirty-five on-farm grower trials were conducted in Mississippi from 1997 through 1999 to compare the economics of Bollgard with Roundup Ready (BG/RR) cotton to conventional cotton. Trials were set-up so that fair and reliable economic comparisons could be made. Growers selected the varieties for comparison. Each variety/technology was managed independent of the comparison variety/technology. Averaged over all comparisons, the results indicate BG/RR cotton offers cost cutting opportunities and potential lint yield gains. In-season herbicide costs were reduced by an average of $1.08/acre and insecticide / Pix costs were reduced by an average of $17.82/acre with BG/RR cotton compared to conventional cotton. Lint yields averaged 66 lbs more with BG/RR cotton compared to the conventional cotton in these comparisons.
