Finish Performance in Northeast Arkansas

E. D. Vories and R. E. Glover

ABSTRACT

Cotton defoliation studies were conducted at the University of Arkansas Northeast Research and Extension Center in 1997 and 1998 to compare the effectiveness of the Rhone Poulenc product Finish (cyclanilide + ethephon) alone and in combination with defoliant, with a standard and with an untreated check. Temperatures in both years were unseasonably warm. In 1997, significant differences among treatments were observed for defoliation at 4, 9 and 14 days after treatment (DAT) and for open bolls at treatment and at 4, 9 and 14 DAT. In 1998, significant differences among treatments were observed for defoliation at 3, 8 and 13 DAT and for open bolls at 8 and 13 DAT. In both years, the defoliation performance of Finish was enhanced when followed by an application of the defoliant Folex (tribufos). A tank mix of the products did not appear as effective as the separate applications. The rate of Finish application (1.0 – 1.5 lb ethephon/acre) did not strongly affect performance in these tests, although rate would probably be more important with lower temperatures.
