The need to be able to distinguish between the two principle pests of the Australian cotton industry Helicoverpa armigera (Ha, Cotton Bollworm) and Helicoverpa punctigera (Hp, Native Budworm) became important in 1983 when Ha developed a level of resistance to synthetic pyrethroid.
