Roundup Ready™ Cotton: Marketing Plans and Weed Control Programs Using Roundup Ultra®

Stewart Sherrick

ABSTRACT

With the advent of Roundup Ready™ cotton, growers will have a new and unique option for getting their cotton crop off to a weed free start with maximum yield potential. Roundup Ultra®; can be applied over the top of Roundup Ready cotton up to the 4th true leaf stage and then applied using post directed equipment until layby. Grass, broadleaf and perennial weeds can be controlled with Roundup Ultra without injury to Roundup Ready cotton. Growers now have an effective option for a total post emergence weed control program or can integrate this new technology with existing soil applied weed control programs. Roundup Ready cotton gives growers a new tool with no carry over concerns, application flexibility and with favorable environmental characteristics. This new technology also offers an excellent way to combat weeds currently resistant to other herbicides. Roundup Ready cotton will fit all productions systems from conventionally tilled cotton to reduced tillage production systems. Full registration is anticipated in 1996 with significant seed available in 1997 in top yielding cotton varieties.
