Throughout the years, cotton growers who have experienced hail damage or a poor plant stand have sought replant advice from Dr. Bobby Phipps.

This week’s Cotton Newsline is three cuts. All cuts are Dr. Bobby Phipps, University of Missouri State Extension Cotton Specialist.

Suggested introduction cut one:

Throughout the years, cotton growers who have experienced hail damage or a poor plant stand have sought replant advice from Dr. Bobby Phipps. Realizing the need for sound data, the University of Missouri State Extension Cotton Specialist conducted a three year test to learn how different factors can influence replanting. The first indicator Phipps studied was the planting date.

Suggested introduction cut two:

The second part of Phipps’ experiment tackled how thin a cotton stand can be for it to remain profitable. He staggered cotton plants per foot and found the highest drop in yield was ten percent.

Suggested introduction for cut three:

For producers who face hail damage, Phipps staggered leaf removal from one to four true leaves per plant to see how many could be lost and the plant survive.
