The majority of Ricky Wiggins’ cotton crop has been affected by one of the four hurricanes to hit the Southeastern United States the past six weeks. With farming operations spread over southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia and the Florida panhandle, Wiggins’ cotton crop has been severely damaged by three of the four hurricanes.

This season’s hurricanes have greatly impacted the agricultural economies of the four counties where Wiggins farms. For example, Wiggins said he’ll be sending 15,000-20,000 fewer bales to Andalusia, Alabama’s Covington Gin. This will greatly impact Wiggins’ and the gin’s bottom line.

Unfortunately, during the past decade, Wiggins’ crops have sustained damage from natural disasters five of those years. With damage ranging from 20 inches of rain from tropical storms in July 1994 to Hurricane George in 1998, Wiggins’ knows how important a disaster assistance package will be for recovery.
