Suggested introduction for cut one:
Nearly 85 percent of the 1.1 million acres of Mississippi cotton in 2003 was planted with transgenic cotton. Entomologist Blake Layton reports the state had light to moderate cotton insect pressure last year and that biotech benefits may have contributed to reduced outbreaks.
Suggested introduction for cut two:
Bollworm pressure is always heavier in the Mississippi Delta due to the area’s corn production, but pressure was still relatively light last year.
Suggested introduction for cut three:
Overall, insecticide applications on Mississippi’s 2003 cotton crop varied, but the statewide average cost of insect control was $86 an acre.
