Lee Tiller discusses USDA's recently approved Cotton Bale Packaging Material specifications for the 2004 crop.

Suggested introduction for cut one:

The United States Department of Agricultural recently approved Cotton Bale Packaging Material specifications for the 2004 crop. Lee Tiller, chairman of the Joint Cotton Industry Bale Packaging Committee and manager of Smith Gin Coop in Odem, Texas, explains why the committee recommended to USDA that only fully coated bale bags be used beginning with the 2004 crop.

Suggested introduction for cut two:

Since USDA is requiring bagging manufacturers to discontinue manufacturing strip-coated and randomly-coated woven polyolefin bagging, many gins will be first-time users of fully coated woven bags. Tiller’s gin has benefited the past two years from advantages of fully coated woven bags.

Suggested introduction for cut three:

Gins may use strip-coated bagging this year if it’s left over from last year and if it was not manufactured after May 11, 2004. However, there are consequences ginners may face if bags that do not meet USDA specifications are used.

Suggested introduction for cut four:

There are several reasons why the National Cotton Council’s Joint Cotton Industry Bale Packaging Committee and USDA review and update these specifications yearly.
