From L-Phenylalanine to Condensed Tannins: A Brief Review of Tannin Chemistry and Biochemistry and a Report on its Distribution in Cotton Plant Parts

Bock G. Chan

ABSTRACT

A brief review on the current knowledge of condensed tannin (C.T.) biosynthesis starting with L-phenylalanine --- > t-cinnamic acid --- > chalcone --- > flavanols (catechins and leucocyanidin) --- > condensed tannins is given. The key intermediate in the C.T. biosynthesis is leucocyanidin), its preparation and molecular structure is discussed. The quantitative C.T. distribution in various cotton floral parts also is presented.
