Johnsongrass Control with Preplant and Spot Treatment Herbicide Applications

Harold R. Hurst

ABSTRACT

After three years' previous preplant usage (1979-81) of TREFLAN (trifluralin) or Prowl (pendimethalin) at 1.5 lb a.i./A, TREFLAN at 0.75 lb a.i./A during 1982-84 maintained a very low (98 plants/A) rhizome johnsongrass population, while the population with Prowl at 0.75 lb a.i./A was approximately five times that of TREFLAN after the sixth year. Without previous usage, Basalin (fluchloralin) at 0.75 lb a.i./A at the end of three years (1984) did not reduce rhizome johnsongrass numbers. Fusilade 4E or 1E (fluazifop) or Verdict (haloxyfop) used as a spot treatment reduced rhizome johnsongrass numbers to 0 when used after TREFLAN; to 626 and 92 plants/A, respectively, when used after Prowl; and to 0 and 136 plants/A, respectively, when used after Basalin when determined in August, 1984. Cotton stand was not affected by any treatment. Seed cotton yields were not increased with the use of spot treatments after TREFLAN as compared to TREFLAN alone. Yields were increased with spot. treatments used after Prowl (30 to 240%) or Basalin (10 to 140%) as compared to Prowl or Basalin alone.
