The Mississippi Cotton Boll Weevil GIS Project - 1993 Update

Glenn Wiygul, J. W. Smith, Jack R. McCarty

ABSTRACT

We have described the development and use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) by the USDA, ARS, Boll Weevil Research Unit at Mississippi State, Mississippi. This project came about because of the need to make management decisions concerning the Boll Weevil Eradication Program. The GIS which we developed was tailor-made to meet the needs of this program. The goals which were to be met during the development of the software package are discussed, along with considerations concerned with the implementation of a state-wide insect monitoring program using this software.
