Dealing with Sticky Cotton

ABSTRACT

Tests were performed on the effects of applying heat and oversprays on very sticky Pima cotton. The stickiness was from whitefly honeydew. It was determined that heating the seed cotton under certain conditions enabled it to be roller ginned at a normal rate for small lots. Also, the use of oversprays enabled small lots to be roller ginned at normal rates. However, neither the heating nor oversprays by themselves enabled the ginned lint to be carded at the target rate of 60 lb/h. It was determined that for very sticky cottons, it was possible to gin, at least small lots, using heat or oversprays, but the effect did not carry over to textile processing. Research must continue to find other means or products to allow the normal processing of sticky cotton in the textile mill.
