An Economic Analysis of Alternative Tillage Systems for Cotton in Louisiana

K.W. Paxton, D.R. Lavergne, and R.L Hutchinson

ABSTRACT

Cotton producers are under increasing pressure to adopt production systems that better preserve natural resources. There are several alternative production systems available. Most of these systems incorporate either reduced tillage operations, a cover crop, or some combination. This study evaluates alternative tillage systems within a stochastic whole-farm context. Data for the analysis were obtained from research conducted at the Macon Ridge branch of the Northeast Research Station. Results of this analysis indicated that a conventional tillage system with a wheat cover crop is the preferred system. None of the reduced tillage systems produced net returns sufficient to dominate the conventional tillage systems.
