Byssinosis - Pathogenic Mechanisms Revisited

R. Rylander

ABSTRACT

This presentation reviews the different pathological mechanisms behind byssinosis (chest tightness) and the other symptoms after cotton dust exposure. Available data suggest that inflammation in the airways and lung tissue plays an important role. Macrophages are the central cell causing this inflammation but neutrophils, platelets and lymphocytes are probably also involved.
