Effects of Lint Cleaning on Pepper Trash

R.V. Baker, A.D. Brashears, and W.F. Lalor

ABSTRACT

Two experiments were conducted to investigate charges that saw-type lint cleaners break large trash particles and create more pepper trash in the lint than they remove. The results of these two experiments do not support this commonly held perception about lint cleaning at the cotton gin. Actually, these results strongly indicated just the opposite effect. The lint cleaner was found to be reasonably efficient in reducing trash levels for all size ranges investigated in these experiments. While these results tended to exonerate the saw-type lint cleaner of charges of creating pepper trash, there was some indication that the saw gin stand increased the levels of fine and pepper size trash in the lint.
