Command Use in Missouri Cotton

ABSTRACT

Cotton lint yields in 1991 were similar when Command or zorial were combined with Treflan plus Cotoran in a weed control program under weed-free conditions. Disyston was applied as an infurrow insecticide at planting. Cotton lint yields were reduced 25% by Command in another study when Thimet insecticide was not applied infurrow at planting, compared to the same treatments following a Thimet applied infurrow at planting.

A Command-Use survey was conducted by mail to determine how Command was applied during the 1991 Section-18 exemption in Missouri for velvetleaf control and to determine problem areas for research and educational purposes. Fifty-nine percent of the survey respondents indicated they used Command in their 1991 cotton weed control program. Approximately 84% of the respondents indicated they will use Command in 1992, if labelled. Survey results indicated that more than 75% of the respondents that used Command in 1991 applied Command between 1 and 2 pt/Ac. Over 95% of the Command was applied in a band over the row and tank-mixed with fluometuron (Cotoran, Meturon, others). Approximately 70 and 30% of the respondents that applied Command following an organophosphate (OP) insecticide infurrow at planting, selected Disyston and Thimet, respectively, as the OP insecticide. Almost 50% of the respondents that used Command in their cotton herbicide program also applied Temik in combination with the OP-insecticide. About 45% of the respondents applied a dinitroaniline herbicide (Treflan, Trilin, Prowl, others) preplant incorporated followed by command and Cotoran preemergence. Survey respondents indicated excellent residual weed control following Command in a weed control program with Cotoran.
