Reducing Barkiness via Multistage Stick Extraction

Roy V. Baker, William R. Lalor and Russell M. Sutton

ABSTRACT

The design and operating characteristics of a new multistage bur and stick extractor for stripper harvested cotton is presented. Laboratory and field test results indicated that the multistage extractor could be used effectively in modern ginning systems to improve bur and stick removal efficiency. Improvements in stick removal at the cotton gin will reduce the amount of bark added to the lint during the ginning process. These reductions in lint barkiness will often result in fewer bark penalties for the farmer.
