Field Research Results on the Boll Weevil Bait Stick

Gerald H. McKibben, James W. Smith, and Eric J. Villavaso

ABSTRACT

Boll Weevil Bait Sticks (McKibben et al. 1990) were field tested in three counties in Mississippi during 1990. Percent reduction from control fields ranged from 15 to 67. The primary purpose was to learn if Bait Sticks at 1/a compared favorably with conventional pinhead insecticide applications. In those areas where grower applications did not interfere with the evaluation, the Bait Sticks appeared to do at least as well as the conventional applications in reducing populations of early season boll weevils. Laboratory work is discussed which showed that certain formulation parameters of the stake coating affected the ability of the stake coating to kill boll weevils.
