Evaluation of Trashmeters in Cotton Classing

Harmon H. Ramey, Jr.

ABSTRACT

In a continuation of the evaluation of instruments for grading cotton for non-lint content, video trashmeters were installed in High Volume Instrument (HVI) systems in seven USDA, Cotton Division Classing Offices. The percentage of the surface area covered by non-lint particles is measured and reported to the nearest 0.1 percentage point. A small percentage of the samples measured in each Classing Office were randomly collected and forwarded to the Quality Control Section for retesting. Seventy-nine percent of the 32,445 retests were within plus or minus 0.1 percentage point of the original test showing that the data are reproducible. The Cotton Division plans to equip all of its HVI systems with video trashmeters.
