ABSTRACT

The purpose of our cotton breeding program is to develop new and improved Acala cottons for production in the One-Quality District of the San Joaquin Valley. The Acala Cotton Board (ACB) administers the One-Quality Law and has established a cotton standard for purpose of providing cotton breeders a reference point. In order to be considered for release, a new cotton must meet the performance of the cotton standard and exceed in at least one meaningful way in the ACB evaluation tests. CPCSD submitted Experimental Acala C-30 to the ACB for evaluation, but this cotton was excluded from testing because of high micronaire. This study was initiated to investigate the micronaire, fineness and maturity of C30. During this study Acala SJC-1 was the ACB cotton standard. Acala SJ-2 included in this study does not technically meet the fiber quality traits of the standard cotton but it exceeds the yield of the wilt tolerant standard on Verticillium wilt-free soils. The ACB has permitted the growing of Acala SJ-2 because it was in production at the time the ACB cotton standard was established, and SJ-2 is now currently grown on approximately 60% of the SJV cotton acreage.
